Admission process in the UK graduate programs can be a long process and to take admission in the UK graduate degrees you are required to submit your application directly to the individual universities. While for graduate teacher training, one has to apply via a separate, centralized online application system. Each university in the UK has its own set of admission conditions and application deadlines hence, it would be rational to visit their websites for more information on admission criteria. Though, most of the applications follow a similar procedure which allows you to re-use some of the materials that you prepare for each application.

Some of the application requirements are as follows-

  • A complete application form
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Your Explanation about funding your education
  • Transcript
  • Letter of Reference
  • Interview

Admission Criteria

Most of the graduate degree programs will require you to have “an upper second class honors degree” which is like a graduation with a minimum of magna cum laude from a US University. In order to get complete, accurate and up to date information it is advised to contact each university to inquire about your qualification sufficient for admission. However, meeting minimum criteria for admission in the University does not guarantee entrance in the University. It simply ensures that your application has been considered for further processing.

The two important factors that are usually considered by faculty members in graduate student’s application are academic ability and suitability for the degree program.

Personal statement

Personal statement plays a very vital role for taking admission in the graduation program in the UK and you can use it as a marketing tool by making yourself stand out. There are certain areas which are essential to mention in the personal statement

  • Your academic background
  • Work or research experience
  • Your leadership or extracurricular involvement
  • Research interests and goals
  • Reasons for selecting the degree program
  • Potential to contribute to the department or field

Besides a personal statement, you are also required to provide an explanation about financing your education. This information would help departments to access how many applicants are receiving university-based funding.

Reference letters

One also requires two to three reference letters for the UK application. The selected universities may give some loose guidelines for selecting referees and it is entirely your responsibility to find your referees and coordinate with them about the reference letters. One of the key reference letters are from an academic source.

Interview

Interview is an optional part of the UK application process but admission interviews help to enhance your application by highlighting elements of your personality or interests which might be useful to convey in person rather than on paper.
